I told you to go try it this Friday morning, it went away soon after that.

Friday morning I sent you a deep dive raving about Claude Fable 5 — the most powerful AI ever released to the public, free until June 22. Go try it, I said. Point it at your hardest problem, I said. Then Friday night, the U.S. government recalled it. I'm not being dramatic: at 5:21pm Eastern on Friday, Anthropic received a federal directive citing national security and export controls, ordering them to shut Fable 5 off for every customer, everywhere, immediately. They complied within hours. The thing I spent a whole newsletter telling you to go use this morning is, as of tonight, gone.

What spooked Washington

Someone claimed they'd found a way to "jailbreak" the model into doing something dangerous. Anthropic reviewed the demonstration and — lightly paraphrasing their official response — it amounted to asking the AI to read some code and fix the bugs. Which is, you know, the literal job of every programmer alive. They also pointed out that other public models, OpenAI's included, do the exact same thing with no jailbreak required. Anthropic says it believes this is a misunderstanding and is fighting to get access restored.

What this means for you

Three quick things. First: every other Claude model still works — Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku are untouched; only Fable 5 and its bigger sibling Mythos 5 went dark. Second: if you did test it this morning before the lights went out, you got a real glimpse of the frontier, so hang on to what you saw. And third: if you didn't get to it, you are not behind — nobody can use it right now, including me. I've now written sever newsletters, and I have never once had a product recommendation overruled by the federal government before sundown. There's a first time for everything. I'll tell you the second it's back.
